Motorcyclist Prepares for 100th Anniversary with Special Historic Content
Magazine sets the industry standard as the most historic continually published motorcycle periodical in the world
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (November 30, 2011) – Motorcyclist magazine will have a big year in 2012, celebrating its 100th anniversary with a full year’s worth of commemorative issues.
All 12 issues during 2012 will feature a special “MC 100” section, which will include a timeline, retrospective stories and photos, tests of period motorcycles and contributions from former staffers. The highlight will be September’s annual “Motorcycle of the Year” issue,
which will also acknowledge the Motorcycle and Motorcyclist of the Century.
“We have a lot of exciting things planned to help commemorate this milestone,”
said Marty Estes, publisher of Motorcyclist. “When you look back on the past 100 years, it’s remarkable how much the industry has evolved, how trends have changed over time and how
far technology has progressed. I’m proud to say that Motorcyclist has been a fixture in the motorcycle world the entire time!”
Much has happened in the century since the first issue of Motorcyclist hit the newsstands:
- On July 12, 1912, Motorcyclist debuted as Pacific Motocycling, a regional bi-weekly magazine published by the Western Journal Company that served Western states only.
- Through the ’20s, the magazine covered bicycles as well as motorcycles.
- In the ’30s, Motorcyclist served as the official magazine of the AMA, a partnership that helped it weather the Great Depression. No other U.S. motorcycle magazine survived.
- First published in 1912, Motorcyclist has reported on virtually the entire history of motor-cycling, making it the magazine of record. Italy’s Motociclismo came two years later.
- The Motorcyclist staff has included such notables as Arthur E. Welch, Chet Billings,
Bill Bagnall, Bob Greene, Dale Boller, Dave Ekins (brother of Bud) and Art Friedman. - Staffers who have raced at the professional level include Jody Nicholas, Tony Murphy, Jeff Karr, Nick Ienatsch. Mitch Boehm and current editor Brian Catterson.
- The magazine has been published under seven different titles: Pacific Motocycling,
Pacific Motorcyclist, The Pacific Motorcyclist, Pacific Motorcyclist and Western Wheelmen, Western Motorcyclist and Bicyclist, The Motorcyclist and Motorcyclist.
